SME I00

Special electrode for gouging all conducting metals

Gouging Electrodes (MMAW)

DETAILS

Electrode for tough and wear-resistant against friction

Features/Characteristics

The SME I00 Gouging Electrode – Piercing by means of shielded metal arc welding principles is a flexible and economic method of removing metal. The process does not require any compressed air, gas or any type of special electrode holder as standard equipment can be used.

The coating on Gouging electrodes develops a strong gas jet, which blows away the molten material. These electrodes are excellent for preparation prior to repair of cast iron.

The jet drives out and burns away impurities and/or graphite on the surface and thus reduces the risk of cracking and porosity when welding later. Gouging of manganese steel can also be suitably done. Easy strike and re-strike during chamfering and grooving.

The electrode produces a high energy arc which rapidly melts the base material and prepares the groove. Gouge all metals including cast
iron, stainless steels, aluminium and copper.

SME I00 Gouging Rod Uses/Applications

1. Best for chamfering and gouging applications of metals and alloy which are difficult to machine.
2. Removal of old weld deposit and rivets.
3. Can gouge all metals including stainless steels, aluminium and copper.
4. Applicable in both ferrous and non-ferrous foundries for the removal of risers and gates from castings.

Note to usage

1. The arc is struck with an electrode which is held at a normal angle to the work piece (15 degrees backwards from
the vertical plane in line with proposed direction of gouging).

2. Once the arc is established, the electrode is immediately inclined in one smooth and continuous movement to an
angle of around 15-20 degrees to the plate surface. With the arc pointing in the direction of travel, This forward
motion as the electrode is guided along the line to complete the gouge.

3. To produce a consistent depth and width of gouge, a uniform rate of travel must be maintained.

4. Together with the angle of electrode: 10-20 degrees. If the electrode angle becomes too steep, in excess of about
20 degrees, the amount of slag and molten metal will increase. This is a result of the are penetrating too deeply.

5. Digging the electrode into the metal causes problems in controlling the gouging operation and will produce a rough
surface profile.
